Is marriage worth it?

Alan Kaufman joined the discussion on Radio 5 Live Breakfast Show on the subject "Is marriage worth it?".  Alan commented on the greater legal and financial rights and protections awarded to those who get married, rather than those who just live together.  There are many situations where people live together for many years, one party may have stayed at home to look after children.  If things go wrong and they separate, that party has no claim for support for themself.
